- Check pH: acidemia below the reference range or alkalemia above it.
- Check PaCO₂: it moves opposite pH in a primary respiratory process.
- Check bicarbonate: it moves with pH in a primary metabolic process.
- Decide whether compensation is absent, partial, or brings pH into range; avoid inventing a mixed disorder from incomplete data.
- Assess PaO₂/oxygenation, symptoms, history, and trend, then address the cause.
