Nigerian Nursing Qualifications and NCLEX-RN Eligibility: BNSc, RN & RN/RM
Official sources checked September 22, 2026.
Quick answer
A Nigerian qualification is evidence for a regulator to assess, not automatic NCLEX-RN eligibility. BNSc graduates, RN diploma holders and RN/RM holders should use the destination’s internationally educated nurse pathway and provide the actual curriculum and registration evidence requested.
At a glance
| BNSc | Submit the actual education record |
|---|---|
| RN diploma | Ask for individual programme assessment |
| RN/RM | Identify nursing and midwifery components separately |
| Post-basic award | Do not assume it replaces initial RN education |
| Older or fresh graduate | Check destination-specific recency and practice rules |
BNSc and general nursing diploma
Record the exact award, institution, dates, theory and clinical components. A degree title alone does not show whether the destination’s nursing-education requirements are met. A diploma holder should not assume either acceptance or rejection based on a social-media answer. Ask the regulator or its designated evaluation service how it assesses the particular programme and what evidence the school must supply.
RN/RM and post-basic awards
Separate your initial general nursing education from midwifery and later specialty qualifications. Show each award accurately and identify which programme prepared you for initial RN registration. A later specialty course should not be presented as a guaranteed remedy for a missing component of initial education. The receiving regulator decides whether additional education or evidence is needed.
Fresh graduates, older graduates and licence gaps
There is no single work-experience rule for every destination. Recent graduation, recent practice and prior examination attempts can matter differently by regulator; the Texas guide highlights its specific recency rules. If your NMCN licence has expired, clarify verification and renewal with NMCN and disclose your actual status to the destination. Keep application eligibility separate from permission to practise locally.
Plan your next steps
- Identify your initial nursing award.
- Collect school and registration references.
- Compare the destination’s education criteria.
- Ask about gaps before buying services.
- Follow the regulator’s written assessment.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Equating a qualification title with automatic eligibility.
- Assuming work experience is universally required or universally irrelevant.
The award title alone cannot establish NCLEX eligibility.

- Identify initial nursing award: BNSc or RN diploma
- Separate RN, RM and post-basic study
- Obtain requested academic and clinical records

Common questions
Can a fresh nursing graduate in Nigeria apply for NCLEX without work experience?
That depends on the destination’s education, registration and recency rules. Some pathways distinguish recent graduation from recent practice. Do not assume either a universal experience requirement or a universal exemption; use the qualifications and destination guides.
Can a Nigerian School of Nursing diploma holder take NCLEX-RN?
The diploma and programme content must be assessed under the destination regulator’s rules. Neither the title alone nor another diploma holder’s outcome settles your eligibility. Ask what academic and clinical evidence is required from your school.
Can a BNSc graduate from Nigeria take NCLEX-RN?
A BNSc can be part of the evidence submitted, but the regulator must assess the programme and all other requirements. It does not automatically confer NCLEX eligibility or a foreign licence.
Does a Nigerian RN/RM qualification meet NCLEX eligibility requirements?
There is no blanket equivalence decision here. Identify your initial RN education and the separate midwifery or post-basic components, then follow the regulator’s assessment process. NMCN registration and destination eligibility are different decisions.
