Meet ShiftMate, your shift management tool.

You have studied the concepts. Now practise the rhythm of a nursing shift. Built for nursing and NCLEX students, ShiftMate helps you organize a fictional floor routine—from receiving handoff, through reminders and breaks, to giving a clear handoff to the next nurse.

Start with the guided demo, then build your own practice shift using fictional assignments. See what belongs in Now, Next and Later, keep track of loose ends, and compare a complete shift review with a focused handover summary. Explore with a tutor or clinical instructor where possible: talk through what you would clarify at handoff, how you would organize your routine, and what you would pass on.

Free to explore. Room to practise.

No account or payment is needed. Your workspace stays on this device. Use fictional examples for student practice; saved preferences make your next practice shift easier to set up.

A simplified practice organizer, not hospital software training. Systems such as Epic and eMARs have advanced clinical functions. ShiftMate does not replace them, clinical supervision or approved records. Use fictional examples for practice and never enter patient-identifying details.

01

Receive handoff

Use a fictional assignment from your tutor. Talk through what you would clarify, then set up generic aliases.

02

Organize the routine

Practise sorting prompts into Now, Next and Later. Revisit reminders, use check-ins and plan a break.

03

Give handoff

Review open items, compare both summaries and rehearse a clear handoff with a tutor or study partner.

Rehearse the everyday moments

Ten moments to explore before your next placement

Put yourself in the nurse’s place. These fictional examples show what to enter, what ShiftMate displays and what still belongs in an approved clinical system. Discuss the choices with your tutor.

01

10:10 AM · Med-Surg

A reminder in the middle of the rush

Nurse

“I need to reassess Bed B in 30 minutes, but three other things need my attention first.”

ShiftMate

Choose Bed B, Reassess and 30 minutes. It appears in Next 60 minutes, then moves to Now when due.

One quick prompt stays visible without using a patient name or replacing the real chart.

02

4:15 PM · Busy afternoon

A quick cue for required documentation

Nurse

“I completed a task and need to make sure the required record is finished before I leave.”

ShiftMate

Add a short, non-identifying memory cue and flag it for Charting. Shift summary brings it back during end-of-shift review.

You can review what still needs attention while details are fresh. Complete documentation at the time and in the system your workplace requires.

03

6:35 PM · Shift ends at 7:00 PM

Something is due after your shift

Nurse

“Bed C has an IV or infusion follow-up at 8:30 PM for the next shift to verify.”

ShiftMate

Choose the generic alias, IV / infusion follow-up and the exact time. ShiftMate marks it as Next shift and includes it in the summary.

The next nurse gets a clearer prompt to verify against the approved order and MAR during your normal handover process.

04

6:50 PM · Before leaving

A calmer final review and handover

Nurse

“What is still open? What should I verify in the chart? What must I mention during handover?”

ShiftMate

Shift summary groups open reminders and flags. The complete shift PDF preserves the nurse's full organizer history, while the focused handover PDF keeps only what the next nurse needs to verify.

Less last-minute searching and a more structured handover. Both PDFs support review; neither replaces the chart or approved handoff.

05

1:05 PM · Break begins

A break without carrying the whole shift in your head

Nurse

“I finally have time for a break, but I am worried I will forget what is coming next.”

ShiftMate

Start Break Mode for the time you choose. The quiet timer keeps running, and Back to your shift shows what is due now and what comes next when the break ends.

The nurse can step away with less mental load. The complete shift PDF records the break time and any ShiftMate activity captured during it.

06

6:55 PM · Handover

A focused report for the nurse taking over

Nurse

“The next nurse needs the outstanding items, but not my entire personal shift history.”

ShiftMate

Download the Next-shift handover PDF. It includes active generic assignments, unresolved reminders, next-shift timings, open handoff and follow-up flags, and relevant cues—without break history or completed tasks.

The next nurse receives a shorter, clearer prompt list to verify during the approved handover and against the current chart, MAR, orders and assessment.

07

2:20 PM · Transfer and new admission

An assignment changes without mixing two patients

Nurse

“Bed D transferred, and a new assignment is arriving under the same generic bed label.”

ShiftMate

Close the earlier assignment, remove its future organizer reminders, then start a new admission sequence for Bed D. Earlier entries remain attached to the earlier assignment in the complete record.

The two assignment timelines stay separate while the official transfer and admission remain in the workplace systems.

08

3:40 PM · Mid-shift check

A Quick check-in catches a loose end

Nurse

“Several things changed quickly. I know there is a follow-up I do not want to lose.”

ShiftMate

Open Quick check-in, choose the generic alias, capture the type of change and flag Follow-up or Reassess for Shift summary.

The nurse saves a short prompt in seconds and sees it again before leaving, without writing patient-identifying details.

09

11:30 AM · Unit-wide follow-up

One reminder for several assignments

Nurse

“I need the same organizer prompt for several active beds and do not want to enter it repeatedly.”

ShiftMate

Use Quick Add, select the relevant generic aliases, choose the reminder type and one time, then apply it to the selected assignments.

A repeated workflow becomes faster while every reminder remains tied to the correct generic assignment card.

10

5:10 PM · Browser reopened

The workspace is still there after an interruption

Nurse

“The browser closed while I was moving between tasks. I do not want to rebuild the shift from memory.”

ShiftMate

Reopen ShiftMate on the same device and resume the locally saved active shift. The countdown, bed cards, reminders and memory flags return together.

The nurse can continue from the saved workspace. Local browser data can still be cleared, so official records must remain in approved clinical systems.

Build familiarity through practice

Everything included, explained in plain language

Now, Next and Later

See what needs attention now, what is coming during the next hour and what can wait.

Bed-by-bed organizer

Open each Bed A, Bed B or Bed C card to update its status, reminders and timestamped memory prompts.

Fast reminders

Choose an organizer reminder and when to see it. Mark it done in ShiftMate after checking your real workflow.

Short memory prompts

Save a brief, non-identifying cue such as “confirm the MAR entry before handoff,” with the time you want to remember.

Private aliases

Use generic labels such as Bed A. ShiftMate does not need names, MRNs or real room numbers.

Quick check-in

Run a short memory check and flag charting, handoff, follow-up, pending work or reassessment for later review.

Break Mode

Use a quiet timer. When the break ends, Back to your shift shows what is due now and next.

Charting-first Shift summary

Review charting checks first, verify required documentation in your approved system, then close handoff, pending, follow-up and reassessment prompts.

Calm progress feedback

See the organizer loops you closed, breaks you completed and Quick check-ins you answered—without turning patient care into a score.

Two focused PDF summaries

Download a complete personal shift record and a separate next-shift handover summary containing only unresolved and relevant handover prompts.

Saved on this device

Close the browser and return. The active shift can remain unless browser data is cleared.

Keep patient identity out of ShiftMate.

Use only generic labels such as Bed A or Bed B. Never enter names, initials, MRNs, dates of birth, actual room numbers, contact details, photographs or other identifying details. Use your approved EHR and MAR for the official record of care.

Shift details stay in this device's browser storage. If that storage is cleared, unavailable or removed, the saved shift may be lost.

A simple introduction to the flow of a shift.

Hospital platforms such as Epic and electronic medication administration records (eMARs) have advanced clinical functions. ShiftMate introduces organization habits; it does not reproduce those systems, teach their operation, or replace charting, medication records, approved handoff or clinical judgment. It is not affiliated with Epic.

Already working as a nurse? You can also use ShiftMate for non-identifying personal reminders where workplace policy permits, including in facilities without a dedicated shift organizer. Keep all care and official records in your facility’s approved systems.

Clear answers

Questions from students and nurses

How should I practise as a student?

Try the guided demo first. Then use a fictional assignment from your tutor, organize the routine, and practise giving handoff. ShiftMate provides organizer prompts, not patient assessments, treatment decisions or a competency score.

What can I save for each bed?

A reminder category, a time prompt, a short non-identifying cue and flags to check later. Keep actual patient care notes in your approved chart.

Can I organize medication or IV follow-up?

Choose a medication or IV follow-up reminder and its date and time, including the next shift. Verify the exact order in the approved MAR; ShiftMate does not prescribe, calculate doses or confirm administration.

Which PDF should I use?

The complete shift record is for reviewing your entire saved organizer history, including breaks. The next-shift handover PDF is shorter and contains unresolved reminders, open handoff and follow-up flags, active generic assignments and relevant cues. Neither replaces the approved handoff process or chart.

Does the shift follow me to another device?

No. The shift stays in this browser on this device by default. Clearing browser data can remove it.

See how a shift flows from start to finish

Choose a unit you are studying and follow a fictional shift from receiving handoff to the final review. Practise organizing prompts, then explain your handoff to a tutor or study partner. The demo gives no care instructions and saves no demo data.

Your next shift can start with practice.

Free to use. No account or subscription required. Never enter patient-identifying details.
