English Language Evidence for Australian Nursing Registration

Check the NMBA language pathway and the correct Ahpra score table for your test date.

Nursing application and study planning steps

Quick answer

Do not copy an old IELTS, OET or PTE score chart. Ahpra publishes separate English-test tables for tests taken up to 22 April 2026 and from 23 April 2026. Registration evidence must meet the applicable standard.

Begin with the evidence pathway

The NMBA English language skills standard provides specified ways to demonstrate English skills. Education history can matter; a test is not automatically required for every person who was born outside Australia. Conversely, speaking English at work does not automatically prove that the standard is met.

Record where and when you studied, the language of teaching and assessment, and the evidence available from the institution. Check the current fact sheet to see which pathway your evidence supports.

Match the table to the examination date

Ahpra’s accepted-test page separates the earlier and newer score requirements. Use the table that applies to the date the English test was taken, and read the rules for component scores, combining sittings and validity. A provider’s general marketing page is not the nursing registration standard.

The current page covers accepted centre-based tests, including IELTS Academic, OET, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT and specified Cambridge examinations. Read the conditions for the particular version. TOEFL applicants should follow Ahpra’s instructions about the Australia test setting. Do not assume a home edition is accepted.

Avoid paying twice for the wrong purpose

An immigration authority, employer or another country’s regulator may require different English evidence. Write the recipient and purpose beside each test booking. One result is reusable only if each recipient accepts that result under its own rules.

Partial translations in RN Clarity can help with selected learning passages. They do not replace English evidence, change the exam language rules or translate every question. Use native-language help to clarify a concept, then practise understanding the original clinical terms.

  • Confirm the accepted test version before booking.
  • Save the applicable official score table and check it again before submission.
  • Confirm how the result must reach Ahpra.
  • Keep registration and migration test requirements separate.
