Texas NCLEX-RN Application and Preparation Guide
Understand Texas BON examination steps, the Nursing Jurisprudence Examination, international education review and licensing requirements.
Quick answer
Texas examination applicants complete the BON application and required evidence, including the Nursing Jurisprudence Examination before ATT. Foreign-educated applicants have additional education, English-evidence and recency conditions.
Texas has two different examinations to understand
NCLEX-RN tests entry-level nursing competence. The Nursing Jurisprudence Examination, or NJE, concerns Texas nursing law and professional rules. They serve different purposes. Passing one does not replace the other.
The BON’s examination instructions require the NJE before ATT. Use the current NJE guidance and the board’s law resources for its preparation. Do not confuse a state jurisprudence score with an NCLEX practice target.
- Read the BON examination sequence for your applicant group.
- Use official NJE instructions and resources.
- Keep Pearson and BON applications separate.

International education and recent practice matter
The BON describes a CES Full Education course-by-course report and applicable English-proficiency evidence for international applicants. Course-by-course means the report examines individual education components rather than simply stating a degree level. Follow the board’s accepted provider and English-test list.
The published first-time international applicant instructions state that the applicant must have worked within the four years before filing the examination application or be within four years of graduation. If your timeline falls outside the rule, ask the BON about the appropriate route before paying or booking travel.
- Confirm the required report and recipient.
- Check English evidence or an applicable exemption through the board.
- Record graduation and practice dates accurately in your own documents.

Eligibility to test is not the same as licence issuance
Texas publishes lawful-presence requirements for issuing and renewing a licence. Its guidance says application review, including NCLEX and NJE, can proceed while required lawful-presence documentation is missing, but a licence cannot be issued without the required proof.
Read the requirements relevant to your status and use the official secure process for submitting evidence. A preparation provider cannot approve lawful presence or work authorization. Immigration, employment and professional licensure remain separate decisions.
- Check fingerprint/background instructions and board requests.
- Confirm identity and licence-issuance requirements.
- Do not treat an ATT or passing result as authorization to work.

Your Texas checklist and budget
The BON fee schedule lists $75 for examination including the NJE fee; Pearson examination registration and other services are separate. Verify the current amount on the board’s fee page and in its portal before payment.
Track the application, required graduation or evaluation evidence, fingerprints, NJE, applicable English evidence and any supplemental documents. Once you receive ATT, read its dates before scheduling. Use the national study planner to keep questions, full rationale review and NGN practice in your routine.
- Use the correct first-time or repeat-candidate route.
- Keep a record of document acceptance rather than assuming delivery completes review.
- Review compact eligibility separately if seeking a multistate licence.
