How to Become a U.S. Registered Nurse from India

Official sources checked September 22, 2026.

Quick answer

The U.S. pathway starts with a state nursing board. Meet its education and other requirements, pass NCLEX when eligible and complete licence issuance. A U.S. licence, employer offer and permission to work are separate outcomes; none is automatically created by an examination result.

For nursing students: plan without assuming eligibility

While completing your programme, identify your intended practice state and learn what its foreign-education pathway requires. Keep accurate institution contacts and records of your initial nursing education. BSc, GNM and Post Basic BSc labels cannot settle eligibility on their own. A preparation subscription can support study, but it does not replace graduation evidence, council registration records or the board’s assessment.

For registered nurses: organise the full history

List education, council registrations, prior overseas licences and recent practice. Check whether the receiving board requires verification from every jurisdiction where you hold or previously held a licence. Compare report requirements before buying a credential service. New York and Texas are explained within the state-board guide as different official processes; they are not presented as universally suitable or easier options for Indian nurses.

Keep four milestones visible

Track examination eligibility, the exam result, actual licence issuance and employment/immigration requirements in separate columns. After passing, check the board’s official record and any remaining conditions. Applicable healthcare-worker screening is a separate purpose and does not approve a visa. Before relocating or accepting work, establish that the relevant registration and work-authorisation conditions are met through the responsible organisations. This guide provides education, not an individual immigration determination.

Plan your next steps

  1. Choose the intended state.
  2. Review your qualifying education and registration evidence.
  3. Complete the board’s application and required checks.
  4. Register with Pearson and obtain ATT.
  5. Prepare and take NCLEX at a confirmed location.
  6. Complete licence and applicable work-related steps.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating a U.S. exam pass as a work visa.
  • Choosing a state based on a guaranteed agency timeline.
  • Assuming a test taken in India creates Indian registration.
Choose your RN destination. Three distinct pathways, not three automatic licences from one exam.

Common questions

I am a nursing student in India and want to work in the USA. Where should I start?

Begin by identifying the state where you intend to practise and reading its foreign-education pathway. While studying, learn which school records and registration evidence it will require. Completing a course, passing NCLEX, obtaining a licence and receiving permission to work are distinct milestones.

How can an Indian nurse become a U.S. RN?

Choose a state, meet its education and other eligibility requirements, complete examination registration and NCLEX, then finish the state’s licence-issuance conditions. Employment, healthcare-worker screening where applicable and permission to work are additional decisions.
